Should we really watch India-Pak match?

The upcoming India, Pakistan cricket clash has triggered strong emotions across the country. While cricket lovers look forward to the high-voltage contest, many argue that the game disregards national sentiment, especially after the Pahalgam terror attack that left 26 innocent lives lost. Families of victims say such matches humiliate their sacrifice.

The anger has grown deeper after a controversial social media post, allegedly shared by Pakistani cricketers, mocked India’s Operation Sindoor,an image seen as a taunt to widows of martyrs. For many, the idea of cheering Pakistan on a cricket field so soon feels unbearable.

Critics also point to the government’s selective approach. After terror strikes, India stopped talks under the Indus Waters Treaty, claiming that “blood and water cannot flow together.” But cricket, it seems, is being treated differently. Why? Analysts say the reason lies in the money that rides on these matches. India–Pakistan games are the most-watched sporting events in the world after the FIFA World Cup. Broadcasters pay record sums, advertisers flood in, and the BCCI earns hundreds of crores from a single match.

This leaves the debate at a crossroads:

• Should the nation allow business interests to outweigh the pain of terror victims?

• Is cricket just “a game,” or is it also a reflection of national honour?

Defenders of the match argue India cannot boycott ICC tournaments without facing global isolation, huge penalties, and loss of influence in world cricket. But opponents insist that profits for BCCI and broadcasters should not come at the cost of national pride and respect for martyrs.

As the match draws near, the choice before the nation is clear,chase glory and profits on the field, or stand firm on principle and send a stronger message beyond the boundary line.
