
Shooting at Historic Teotihuacán Leaves One Dead, 13 Injured
An armed man opened fire on tourists at Teotihuacán on Monday, killing a Canadian national and injuring at least 13 others in a violent incident at one of Mexico’s most iconic heritage sites. A UNESCO World Heritage Site near Mexico City, Teotihuacán is famed for its ancient pyramids and draws millions of visitors annually.
The attack occurred shortly after 11:30 a.m. at the Pyramid of the Moon, where dozens of visitors had gathered. Authorities said the gunman later died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound , and a weapon, knife, and ammunition were recovered.
Officials confirmed that seven victims sustained gunshot injuries , while others were hurt during the chaotic escape. Those hospitalized include tourists from multiple countries, including the United States, Colombia, Brazil, Russia, and Canada.
Eyewitnesses described scenes of panic as gunfire erupted. Visitors reportedly dropped to the ground or rushed down the pyramid’s steep steps , while some lay still to avoid being targeted. Videos circulating online show the attacker standing atop the structure as people fled.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed solidarity with victims , confirming that a full investigation is underway. Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand said one Canadian was killed and another injured.
Authorities have not yet identified the shooter or determined a motive , and there is currently no evidence linking the attack to terrorism or organized crime .
The incident has raised concerns over security measures at major tourist sites .
