Shilparamam: The Abode of Traditional Arts in Hyderabad
For city dwellers constantly navigating a chaotic lifestyle, there exists a serene haven right in the heart of the city that offers a breath of fresh air and a natural, rustic environment. This is Shilparamam , a sanctuary for arts and traditions and a living showcase of rural life. Spanning over 65 acres, this crafts village transports visitors into a world of lush greenery, blue lakes, and vibrant shopping hubs.
Stepping into Shilparamam feels like entering a space where rural arts and festive celebrations coexist. For elders, the surroundings evoke nostalgia for their childhood villages, while for children, it appears as an enchanting new world. It is a unique confluence of Indian handicrafts, terracotta sculptures, cotton and silk textiles, music, dance, and traditional rural activities. While the Rural Museum depicts the essence of village life, the Crafts Bazaar introduces the splendor of Indian handiwork. During festivals like Sankranti, Ugadi, and Navratri, the atmosphere turns electric with joy, making it a perfect cultural getaway for families.
History and Significance
Located in Madapur, near the IT hub of HITEC City, Shilparamam was envisioned to create an environment conducive to preserving traditional crafts. The state government established this platform in 1992 to encourage and protect Indian arts and artisans. Recently, the Telangana government set up a "Mini Shilparamam" in Uppal following a similar model.
The name is derived from "Shilpa" (sculpture/art) and "Aranam" (refuge/abode). True to its name, it serves as a complete stage for artisans to showcase their skills.
