Shield Kids from Social Media Risks: Nara Lokesh
The Andhra Pradesh government is stepping up efforts to protect children from the harmful effects of social media , with a focus on restricting access for those under 13 . State Minister for Education, IT and Electronics, Nara Lokesh, has directed officials to prepare a policy framework and draft legislation to regulate minors’ use of digital platforms.
At a meeting held in Undavalli with ministers, senior officials and representatives of major social media companies, he stressed the need for clear age-based regulations , ensuring that users aged 13 to 16 are limited to appropriate content. He also warned of strict action against those posting abusive or derogatory remarks against women online.
Officials have been asked to study regulatory models from Australia, Singapore and Denmark to strengthen child safety measures in the state.
The government will also launch awareness programmes through school initiatives such as “No Bag Day” and parent-teacher meetings, while extending online safety training to women in self-help groups.
To support enforcement, the minister suggested exploring a DigiLocker-based “age token” system for user verification and directed officials to expedite the appointment of an adjudicating officer under Section 46 of the IT Act.
