Shane Watson named KKR assistant coach ahead of IPL 2026

Former Australian all-rounder Shane Watson has been appointed as assistant coach of the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) for the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season, the franchise announced on Thursday.

Watson’s rich international career spanned 59 Tests, 190 One-Day Internationals, and 58 T20 Internationals, during which he accumulated more than 10,000 runs and took over 280 wickets across formats. His all-round skills were instrumental in Australia’s triumphs at the 2007 and 2015 ICC World Cups, besides contributing to several notable series victories around the world.

A successful stint in the Indian Premier League was also enjoyed by Watson between 2008 and 2020, during which he appeared in 145 matches and registered four centuries. He was part of the title-winning squads of Rajasthan Royals in the inaugural 2008 season and Chennai Super Kings in 2018, where his match-winning performances earned him recognition as one of the league’s most impactful players.

Following his retirement from competitive cricket, Watson transitioned into coaching and mentorship roles in global T20 leagues, earning respect for his tactical acumen and player development skills.

“I am eager to work closely with the coaching group and players to help bring another title to Kolkata,” Watson was quoted as saying in the franchise’s press release.

KKR CEO Venky Mysore expressed delight at Watson’s inclusion in the team’s support staff. He stated that Watson’s international experience as both player and coach would add immense value to the squad’s preparation and culture, emphasizing that his understanding of the T20 format was world-class.

Over the years, KKR’s coaching setup has seen several notable figures guiding the team through different phases. Earlier head coaches include Chandrakant Pandit (2022–2025), Brendon McCullum (2020–2022), Jacques Kallis (2016–2019), and Trevor Bayliss (2012–2014), each of whom played a role in shaping the franchise’s progress and strategy.

The Kolkata Knight Riders, who have won the IPL title twice (2012 and 2014), are expected to benefit from Watson’s presence in their backroom staff as preparations intensify for the IPL 2026 campaign. His appointment is viewed as a move to strengthen KKR’s leadership group and enhance their pursuit of another championship.
