Shabnim Ismail’s Shocking U-Turn! Back For World Cup After Retirement
South African pace spearhead Shabnim Ismail has reversed her international retirement after being named in the 15-member squad for the Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 in the United Kingdom, scheduled from June 12 to July 5.
Ismail, who had stepped away from international cricket after the 2023 T20 World Cup final in Cape Town , had earlier cited the need to manage her physical workload, long-term fitness, and recovery after years of fast bowling at the highest level. She also aimed to extend her career through franchise cricket and take a break from the demands of international schedules.
Her return, however, comes after discussions with team management and selectors , along with a reassessment of her fitness and availability for major tournaments. The 37-year-old has also expressed renewed motivation, with selectors highlighting her continued hunger to represent South Africa and contribute in a leadership role during a global event.
Ismail brings vast experience to the squad, having played 113 T20 Internationals and holding a national record of 123 wickets in the format. She is expected to strengthen a side captained by Laura Wolvaardt , which has been in strong form following a 4-1 series win over India .
South Africa has also welcomed back key players, with Marizanne Kapp returning from illness, Dane van Niekerk from a calf injury, and wicketkeeper-batter Karabo Meso from a wrist injury. Young batter Kayla Reyneke earns her maiden World Cup call-up after an impressive domestic and international season.
The squad also includes Tazmin Brits, Sune Luus, Annerie Dercksen, Nadine de Klerk, and Chloe Tryon , while the bowling unit features Ayabonga Khaka, Tumi Sekhukhune, and Nonkululeko Mlaba .
South Africa, which has reached the last three ICC tournament finals , will open its campaign against Australia in Manchester on June 13 , followed by matches against Pakistan, India, the Netherlands, and Bangladesh.
Head coach Mandla Mashimbyi said Ismail’s return adds experience, balance, and belief , as the team aims to stay focused on one game at a time while targeting a historic World Cup title.
