Seven workers killed as under-construction wall collapses at Gurugram construction site

Seven migrant workers were killed and four others injured after a wall and mound of soil collapsed at an under-construction site in Gurugram on Monday evening, officials said.

The incident occurred at the Signature Global residential project in Sidhrawali village near the Gurugram–Rewari border, where construction of a Sewerage Treatment Plant (STP) was underway. Around 12 to 15 labourers working at the site were present when a concrete retaining wall suddenly gave way, triggering a massive soil cave-in that buried the workers under debris.

According to officials, the accident occurred between 7.30 pm and 8 pm. Authorities were alerted later in the evening after a nearby hospital reported multiple casualties. Following the incident, rescue teams from police, SDRF (State Disaster Response Force) and NDRF (National Disaster Response Force) rushed to the site and launched a rescue operation to retrieve the trapped labourers.

Heavy earth-moving machinery was deployed to remove soil and debris, while high-mast lights were installed to assist the night-long operation. The workers were pulled out from under the rubble and taken to a hospital in Bhiwadi, Rajasthan, where seven workers were declared dead . The rescue operation continued until about 3.30 am on Tuesday.

Police identified the deceased as Shivshankar, Parmeshwar Mahto, Mangal Mahto, Bhagirath Gope, Satish, Sanjeev Gope and Dhananjay Mahto. The injured were identified as Indrajit, Chhotelal and Shivkam Chaudhary, all residents of Nepal, and Deendayal Sharma.

Officials said the victims were working several feet below ground level when the collapse occurred and workers likely died due to asphyxiation after being buried under soil. The injured labourers are undergoing treatment at a hospital in Bhiwadi.

Postmortem examinations of the deceased will be conducted in Gurugram. Police said they have informed the victims’ families and are completing legal formalities. A case will be registered after receiving formal complaints, and authorities have launched a probe into possible safety lapses .

Some relatives of the deceased have demanded compensation of Rs 50 lakh and sought accountability from those responsible for the construction work.
