
Seven killed after govt hospital wall collapses in Bengaluru during heavy rain
A tragic wall collapse at Bowring and Lady Curzon Hospital in Bengaluru has left seven people dead, including three children, after heavy rain, strong winds, and hailstorms battered the city on Wednesday.
According to police, the victims mostly street vendors and passersby had taken shelter beside the hospital’s compound wall to escape the sudden downpour. In a matter of seconds, the aging wall gave way , collapsing on them and killing all seven on the spot.
Emergency response teams, along with local residents, rushed to the scene and launched a rescue operation using an earthmover to clear debris. Several others were reported injured and shifted to nearby medical facilities, where the government has assured free treatment .
The incident occurred amid a sharp weather shift in Bengaluru , which had been experiencing intense heat before being hit by sudden thunderstorms, gusty winds of up to 40–50 kmph, and hail. The extreme conditions led to waterlogging, fallen trees, and widespread disruption across the city.
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah visited the site and announced an ex-gratia of ₹5 lakh for the families of each of the deceased. He also ordered a probe into the incident to determine whether structural negligence or poor maintenance contributed to the collapse. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences, calling the loss of lives deeply unfortunate.
Authorities have begun the process of identifying victims. While most names are yet to be officially released, two victims from Kerala Smitha Raghu and Latha Manakkakudi , reportedly part of a Kudumbashree group have been identified. Officials indicated that verification is ongoing, particularly as some victims were informal workers without immediate documentation.
