Seven Injured in Gajuwaka Bridge Collapse During Construction Work

A major accident occurred on Sunday in the Gajuwaka area of Visakhapatnam when a railway bridge under construction collapsed , leaving seven workers seriously injured .

The incident took place near Tunglam , close to the Duvvada railway station , where a new railway overbridge was being constructed to ease persistent traffic congestion caused by the existing narrow bridge. Construction work was progressing at a rapid pace, and on Sunday morning, workers had begun concrete slab laying operations .

However, during the process, the centering structure (scaffolding) reportedly failed to bear the load and suddenly collapsed. Workers present on the bridge fell along with iron rods and wet concrete , triggering panic in the area.

Local residents, alerted by a loud noise, immediately informed the police. Rescue teams, along with locals, rushed to the site and worked intensively to pull the trapped workers out from under the debris.

The injured have been identified as Buddheshwar, Bose, Ajit, Dinesh, Tushar, Pratap, and Uday . All were shifted to KIMS Hospital in Sheelanagar for treatment.

Upon receiving information, Gajuwaka constituency coordinator Tippala Srinivasa Devan Reddy visited the accident site and later met the injured at the hospital, urging doctors to provide better medical care .

Authorities have initiated an investigation to determine whether there was any negligence by the contracting agency in adhering to safety standards .
