Seven Injured in Alleged Attack on Dalits in Tamil Nadu's Tenkasi, Probe Underway
Seven Dalits were injured after they were allegedly attacked by a masked gang in Tamil Nadu's Tenkasi district, in an incident that has once again drawn attention to the continuing challenge of caste-based violence despite decades of legal safeguards.
According to police, a nine-member gang wearing masks arrived on two-wheelers at Nettur village on Friday and allegedly attacked residents indiscriminately with sickles. The assailants fled the scene immediately after the assault.
The injured victims were rushed to a nearby government hospital for treatment. Police have registered a case and launched an investigation to identify and apprehend those responsible for the attack.
While authorities are yet to establish the motive behind the assault, the incident has reignited concerns about the vulnerability of Dalit communities in several parts of the country. Despite constitutional guarantees of equality and laws such as the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act , caste-based discrimination and violence continue to surface with alarming regularity.
Activists and social justice advocates have long argued that legal protections alone are insufficient without effective enforcement, speedy justice, and sustained efforts to challenge deeply rooted social prejudices. Incidents involving assaults, social exclusion, and attacks on Dalit communities continue to be reported across different states, highlighting the gap between legal provisions and social realities.
The Tenkasi attack serves as a reminder that caste remains a significant fault line in Indian society. As investigators work to determine the circumstances behind the assault, the incident is likely to fuel renewed calls for stronger preventive measures, accountability, and community-level interventions aimed at curbing caste-based violence.
Police said further investigation is underway.
