Seven Fishermen Rescued After Boat Capsizes Off Tuticorin Coast in Tamil Nadu

All seven fishermen escaped safely after their fishing boat capsized off the Tuticorin coast of Tamil Nadu on Sunday following strong winds and rough sea conditions. Officials have started an investigation into the incident, while the boat has sunk.

The country boat belonged to Sugirthan, a fisherman from Tharuvaikulam village near Tuticorin. It had left the shore two days ago with seven crew members for a fishing trip.

The accident took place in the waters between Punnakayal and Tiruchendur when the fishermen were casting their nets. Local sources said sudden strong winds hit the area, causing the boat to lose balance and overturn.

As the boat started sinking, Sugirthan and the six other fishermen jumped into the sea. They managed to stay afloat until a nearby mechanised fishing boat spotted them. Fellow fishermen quickly pulled all seven to safety, preventing any loss of life.

The fishing boat later sank into the sea. No injuries were reported in the incident, according to local officials.

The Fisheries Department and the Coastal Security Group (CSG) have registered a case and launched a detailed probe to find out the exact cause of the accident. Officials are also expected to assess the loss of the vessel.

The incident has once again highlighted the dangers fishermen face during sudden weather changes along the Tamil Nadu coast. Authorities have repeatedly advised fishing crews to closely follow weather updates before heading into the sea, especially during periods of strong winds and rough conditions.
