Seven Booked in Mumbra Mass Nikah Case for Marrying Minor Girl, Probe Under Way
Seven persons have been booked in Mumbra, Thane district , for allegedly marrying off a minor girl during a mass wedding ceremony (nikah) held in Sonaji Nagar, police said.
The case pertains to an event organised on December 2 last year, where the girl, whose Aadhaar records show a date of birth of September 30, 2008 was allegedly married without her father’s consent, according to a complaint lodged by a social worker.
Police said the accused include the event organisers, the qazi who solemnised the nikah , the girl’s mother , the groom, and others, including a school principal allegedly linked to the arrangement .
The case has been registered under the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006 , which criminalises participation in, facilitation of, or solemnisation of marriages involving minors.
Officials said the matter came to light after the complaint flagged that the girl was under 18 at the time of marriage, making the union legally invalid. The complaint also alleged that the marriage was conducted despite objections from the girl’s father.
Police added that no arrests have been made so far and the investigation is ongoing at the Mumbra police station . Further statements from the accused and verification of age-related documents are part of the ongoing probe.
Authorities are also examining whether any additional offences, including provisions under child protection laws, may apply depending on findings of the investigation.
