Sensex Jumps 483 Points as Global Markets Recover, Oil Slips From Six-Month High
Indian stock markets staged a strong recovery on Monday, snapping a four-day losing streak as the Sensex surged 483 points and the Nifty climbed above 22,750. Buying in metal, pharmaceutical and telecommunications stocks lifted benchmarks, while easing crude oil prices offered some relief amid persistent geopolitical and economic uncertainty.
The BSE Sensex rose 482.92 points, or 0.66%, to close at 73,606.75, while the NSE Nifty 50 advanced 153.20 points, or 0.68%, to settle at 22,753.20. The Sensex recovered from an intraday low of 72,514.57 to finish at its session high.
Adani Ports, Eternal, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Trent, Tata Steel, Bharti Airtel, InterGlobe Aviation and ITC were among the major gainers. Bajaj Finance, HDFC Bank, Maruti Suzuki, HCL Technologies and Power Grid ended lower. Mid-cap and small-cap stocks also recovered after last week’s sharp correction, although investors remained selective.
Global markets were largely higher on Monday after Wall Street ended lower on Friday. European shares advanced, while US stock futures edged up. Japan’s Nikkei 225 and South Korea’s Kospi declined, but Hong Kong and Shanghai finished in positive territory.
Brent crude fell around 1.5% to $115 a barrel, retreating from Friday’s settlement of $116.72, its highest since June 2022. US crude also declined to around $101. Supply concerns persisted following Houthi attacks on Saudi oil infrastructure, while diplomatic efforts to ease regional tensions offered some relief.
Investors are now bracing for a crucial week of corporate earnings and central bank decisions. Alphabet, Microsoft and Amazon are due to report results, with markets seeking evidence that massive artificial intelligence investments can generate sustainable returns. The US Federal Reserve’s October 28 decision, inflation data and policy signals from European and Japanese central banks will also shape sentiment.
Foreign institutional investors bought equities worth ₹887.65 crore on Friday. Despite Monday’s rebound, elevated oil prices, inflation risks and uncertainty over borrowing costs could limit further gains.
