Benchmark equity indices Sensex and Nifty ended marginally lower on Tuesday, snapping a four-session winning streak as late-session profit booking , weak Asian market cues, and investor caution ahead of the US Federal Reserve's meeting minutes weighed on sentiment.

The BSE Sensex slipped 104.35 points (0.13%) to close at 78,180.72 , after rising as much as 379.85 points during the session. The NSE Nifty fell 31.65 points (0.13%) to settle at 24,398.70 . The benchmarks had gained more than 2% over the previous four sessions , touching over two-month highs on Monday.

Trent emerged as the biggest loser, plunging 12.42% after its June-quarter revenue growth fell short of market expectations. Other major laggards included Adani Ports, Bharat Electronics, Larsen & Toubro, Reliance Industries , and ICICI Bank .

Losses were partially offset by strength in IT stocks ahead of the quarterly earnings season. HCLTech climbed 3.08% , while Tech Mahindra, Infosys , and TCS also advanced. Titan gained 2.62% after reporting 41% year-on-year revenue growth in the June quarter, driven by robust performance across its jewellery, watches, and eyewear businesses.

According to market analysts, profit booking in the second half of the session, coupled with weak Asian markets and caution over upcoming US Fed minutes, dampened investor sentiment. However, optimism surrounding the IT earnings season supported technology stocks.

Broader markets also remained under pressure, with the BSE SmallCap Select index declining 1.08% and the MidCap Select index falling 0.15% . Rising Brent crude prices , up 1.22% to $72.87 per barrel , and geopolitical concerns in the Strait of Hormuz further weighed on market sentiment.
