Senior maoist leader Pothu Kalpana surrenders

A top-ranking member of the Communist Party of India (Maoist), Pothu Kalpana, also known as Sujathakka, has surrendered to Telangana police. Her surrender is a significant blow to the organization, as she was the sole woman on the party's central committee.

She is the widow of Maoist leader Kishanja, who was killed in a police encounter in West Bengal in 2011. At the time of her surrender, Sujathakka was an influential figure, holding the position of in-charge for the Chhattisgarh South Sub-Zonal Bureau. She was a highly sought-after operative, wanted in 106 cases and with a bounty of ₹1 crore on her head.

Telangana's Director General of Police (DGP) Jitender confirmed the details of her surrender during a press conference. He revealed that Sujathakka, a native of Penchikalapadu, Gadwal district, had a long history with the Maoist movement. She began her journey working in the RSEU and Jana Natya Mandali before rising through the ranks to become a commander in 1996 and a state committee member in 2001.

DGP Jitender further explained that Sujathakka's decision to surrender was primarily due to declining health. As a result of her surrender, she will receive a reward of ₹25 lakh, as per the government’s policy. The DGP used this opportunity to extend an invitation to other Maoists, urging them to abandon their violent path and join the mainstream of society. He noted that her surrender is part of a growing trend, with many other Maoists choosing to lay down their arms and reintegrate into society. The police department's ongoing efforts to encourage surrenders seem to be yielding positive results, demonstrating a shift in the dynamics of the conflict.
