Senior Congress Leader and Former Union Minister Suresh Kalmadi Passes Away at 81

Senior Congress leader and former Union minister Suresh Kalmadi passed away in Pune early Tuesday following a prolonged illness, family sources said. He was 81.

Kalmadi breathed his last at around 3.30 am. His mortal remains were kept at his residence in the Erandwane area of the city till 2 pm, after which the cremation was held at the Vaikunth crematorium in Navi Peth.

Reacting to his demise, Congress leader Sangeeta Tiwari said Kalmadi played a decisive role in building sports infrastructure in the country and described him as a positive and compassionate leader. She said Kalmadi “was like an angel” who believed in merit while giving election tickets and always encouraged capable leadership. Calling his death a major loss for Pune, Tiwari said that much of the development and public infrastructure the city enjoys today can be traced back to his efforts and vision.

A prominent political figure from Pune, Kalmadi represented the city multiple times in the Lok Sabha and remained an influential presence in Maharashtra politics for decades. During his political career, he served as Union Minister of State for Railways in the 1990s, where he was involved in parliamentary and administrative work related to passenger services, rail connectivity and regional railway development, particularly for Maharashtra.

Kalmadi was also a towering figure in Indian sports administration. He served as president of the Indian Olympic Association for several years and held positions in international sports bodies, playing a key role in increasing India’s engagement with global sporting institutions. His tenure coincided with a phase when India began hosting large international sporting events and expanding sports infrastructure.

He was best known nationally for his role as chairman of the organising committee of the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi. Under his leadership, the Games saw the construction and modernisation of major sports venues and facilities that continue to be used for national and international competitions. However, the run-up to the Games was marred by allegations of corruption and procedural irregularities, leading to investigations and legal proceedings that significantly impacted his public standing and political career. Kalmadi was arrested in connection with the case in 2011 and later released on bail. While the Games themselves were eventually conducted successfully, the controversy became one of the most high-profile political scandals of the period and remained closely associated with his name.

Born in Pune, Kalmadi began his public life after serving as an Indian Air Force pilot before entering politics. Over the years, he held several key positions in the Congress and was regarded as a powerful organiser and administrator, especially in Pune’s civic and parliamentary affairs.

Following his death, leaders across party lines expressed grief and extended condolences to his family. Several Congress leaders took to social media to remember him as a long-serving parliamentarian and sports administrator, acknowledging his contribution to public life and Indian sports.
