‘Self-styled Vishwaguru stands exposed’: Congress slams Modi over Pak’s mediation in US-Iran truce

The Congress on Wednesday launched a sharp political attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi , claiming that Pakistan’s reported role in facilitating the ceasefire between the United States and Iran raises serious questions about India’s diplomatic strategy and global positioning.

Congress general secretary in charge of communications Jairam Ramesh said the international community would cautiously welcome the two week ceasefire in the West Asia conflict , which has witnessed escalating tensions between the United States, Israel and Iran .

However, he argued that Pakistan’s involvement in the diplomatic process represents a setback to the Modi government’s long standing attempt to isolate Islamabad globally over its alleged support to terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir .

According to Ramesh, the fact that Pakistan could emerge as a player in the ceasefire discussions despite its economic difficulties calls into question the effectiveness of India’s diplomatic narrative. He said the government’s efforts to project Pakistan as an isolated state appear to have had limited impact internationally.

The Congress leader also criticised the Prime Minister for remaining silent on Israel’s military actions in Gaza and what he described as its expansionist policies in the occupied West Bank . He further alleged that the government has avoided commenting on controversial remarks made by leaders in the White House .

Ramesh also referred to Operation Sindoor , questioning why the military operation was halted abruptly in May 2025 and why the first announcement regarding the halt came from the United States Secretary of State rather than the Indian government.

Meanwhile, the geopolitical situation shifted after US President Donald Trump announced that Washington would hold off on military strikes against Iran, following discussions involving Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir .

Trump said Iran had agreed to negotiations and to reopen the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz , a crucial global energy route. Iran later confirmed it had accepted the ceasefire and would begin negotiations with the United States in Pakistan later this week.
