Seismic unrest in Canada and Nepal: powerful Yukon quake, shallow Nepal tremors

A powerful earthquake of magnitude 7.0 struck near the Yukon-Alaska border in Canada on Saturday afternoon (local time), marking one of the strongest on-land quakes recorded in the country in decades.Canada registered the tremor at a shallow depth of five kilometres, a factor that often intensifies ground shaking.

Seismologists noted that although the region has a known history of tectonic activity, magnitude-7 earthquakes in Canada remain rare. The mountainous northern Cordillera region, particularly around Yukon, lies along complex fault systems such as the Tintina Fault. While large earthquakes are possible there, they occur infrequently, making Saturday’s event notable rather than routine.

Following the quake, Yukon Highways and Public Works announced the closure of the South Klondike Highway from kilometre 24 to kilometre 106 starting at 5 pm due to an elevated avalanche risk. The road is expected to remain closed overnight, with officials reassessing conditions on Sunday morning. Despite the strength of the quake, authorities have confirmed that no injuries or damage have been reported so far.

In South Asia, Nepal recorded a magnitude 4.1 earthquake on Sunday morning, according to the National Center for Seismology (NCS). The tremor, which occurred at 8:13 am at a depth of five kilometres, is the second shallow earthquake the country has experienced within a week. Nepal had previously registered a magnitude 4.2 earthquake on November 30 at a depth of 10 kilometres, followed by another magnitude 3.6 event earlier in November. The shallow depth of these quakes increases the risk of noticeable shaking and potential aftershocks.

Nepal remains one of the world’s most earthquake-prone regions due to the ongoing collision between the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates. This convergent boundary, where the Indian Plate pushes beneath the Eurasian Plate, continuously builds immense stress within the Earth’s crust. The same tectonic forces that drive the rise of the Himalayas also make Nepal highly susceptible to recurring seismic events. The country’s long history of earthquakes, including the devastating 2015 disaster, underscores the persistent hazards associated with its geological setting.
