Security forces dismantle Six bunkers in Manipur as ethnic tensions simmer

Security forces have dismantled six illegal bunkers constructed by armed groups in Ukhrul district, in a fresh push to curb escalating violence in the region, police said on Thursday.

The bunkers, located in Litan and Mongkat Chepu Upper village areas , were reportedly used in recent gunfights that left at least three people injured . The operation, launched earlier this week, is part of an ongoing effort to neutralize fortified positions used by armed elements.

“In continuation of the operation, six illegally constructed bunkers were dismantled … A majority of bunkers in violence-affected Litan have been rendered ineffective,” the police said in a statement. Security forces remain on high alert , with troops strategically deployed to prevent further escalation.

The development comes amid rising tensions between Kuki and Tangkhul Naga communities near Litan Sareikhong. Clashes in February had led to the burning of over 30 houses , triggering a cycle of retaliatory violence in surrounding villages.

Fresh incidents have continued to surface. Two Tangkhul Naga individuals were injured in firing at Sharkaphung in Kamjong district on Tuesday, while a Kuki woman sustained injuries in Mongkot Chepu a day earlier. Villages in the area have witnessed repeated exchanges of fire between armed groups in recent weeks.

The broader security situation in Manipur remains fragile , with ethnic tensions and the presence of armed groups complicating peace efforts. Authorities have intensified search operations and area domination patrols in fringe and vulnerable areas to curb violence and recover illegal weapons.

Officials said forces will continue security operations to stabilize the region , even as tensions persist in parts of the hill districts.
