Security Forces Arrest NSCN(K) Militant Over Highway Extortion in Manipur

Security forces have arrested an alleged militant of the banned National Socialist Council of Nagaland (Khaplang) [NSCN(K)] in Manipur's Tamenglong district, marking another step in the state's ongoing counter-insurgency operations aimed at curbing extortion, illegal arms networks, and militant activity.

According to a police statement, the accused, Lungthaukhon Panmei (32), was apprehended on Saturday along National Highway-37 in the Kaimai police station area. The highway serves as a crucial transport corridor connecting Imphal with Silchar in Assam and has often remained vulnerable to extortion by insurgent groups.

Police alleged that the militant was involved in extortion activities targeting commuters and transport operators using the highway. During the operation, security personnel recovered extortion-related documents and ₹2,800 in cash from his possession. Further investigation is underway to determine his network and any possible links with other operatives.

In a separate operation, security forces also arrested Laishram Lakpati Singh (56) from Khongman Zone-III in Imphal East district for his alleged involvement in the illegal procurement and sale of arms, ammunition, and explosives. A hand grenade and 10 rounds of 9mm ammunition were seized during the raid.

The twin arrests come as security forces continue coordinated counter-insurgency operations across Manipur, focusing on dismantling militant infrastructure, preventing extortion along key highways, and disrupting illegal arms trafficking. Joint operations involving the police, Army, and central security forces have been intensified in both the valley and hill districts to restore normalcy and strengthen law and order.

Authorities have maintained that sustained intelligence-based operations are essential to weaken insurgent networks, secure critical transport routes, and prevent the movement of illegal weapons across the state. Investigations into both cases are ongoing, and officials said further arrests have not been ruled out.
