Secretariat Is to Work, Not Gaze at Sea: Stalin Slams TVK's Marina Plan
DMK president MK Stalin on Monday opposed the TVK government's proposal to construct a new Secretariat-Assembly complex at Foreshore Estate near Marina Beach, saying the project could affect the livelihoods and neighbourhood of fishermen living in the area.
In a statement, the former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister said there was no need for a new Secretariat in an already congested locality, particularly if it meant disrupting the traditional livelihood of the fishing community.
"A Secretariat is meant for the Chief Minister to work and not to gaze at the sea," Stalin said sarcastically, taking a swipe at the TVK government's proposal to locate the complex close to the Marina.
Stalin also announced DMK's full support for the fishermen protesting against the project, saying the party would stand with them in opposing the proposed development.
"We will crush the TVK regime's arrogance," Stalin said, alleging that the government had refused to withdraw the Government Order (GO) issued for construction of the new Secretariat despite opposition from parties supporting the administration.
The proposal has also drawn criticism from the CPI(M), which extends support to the TVK government from outside. The Left party has staged a protest against the proposed complex, citing concerns over its possible impact on fishermen and the environmental vulnerability of the coastal location.
The proposed Secretariat-Assembly complex has emerged as a point of political contention, with opposition parties and sections of the fishing community questioning the choice of Foreshore Estate as the site.
Stalin's remarks add to the growing political opposition to the project, with the DMK seeking the withdrawal of the government order and backing the fishermen's objections.
The controversy comes as the TVK government faces demands to reconsider the location of the proposed administrative complex and address concerns raised over livelihoods, coastal ecology and urban congestion.
