The second phase of the long-pending inventory of the Ratna Bhandar at the Puri Jagannath Temple commenced on Wednesday, marking a significant step in documenting the shrine’s centuries-old treasury.

A designated team comprising servitors, gemologists, and goldsmiths entered the treasury around 11:30 am, accompanied by Ratna Bhandar Committee chairman Justice Biswanath Rath and Shree Jagannath Temple Administration chief Arabinda Padhee. The exercise is being conducted under a state-approved Standard Operating Procedure to ensure systematic documentation and transparency.

Officials said the current phase focuses on the Bahar Ratna Bhandar , which houses ornaments used during festivals. Among these are the renowned ‘Suna Bhesa’ gold ornaments, adorned by the deities on select ceremonial occasions, including the annual Rath Yatra festivities. Historical records from 1978 indicate that the treasury contains over 100 items, including gold- and silver-based jewellery.

The first phase of the inventory, initiated on March 25, covered daily-use ornaments of the deities. Authorities employed videography, photography, and 3D mapping to create a detailed digital catalogue, with items stored in separate chests based on metal classification.

The ongoing exercise, the first such effort in 48 years, will continue in phases until mid-April. Temple rituals are proceeding without disruption, though devotees have been restricted to designated viewing areas due to heightened security arrangements.

Elaborate security measures, including multi-layer deployment of police forces, restricted access points, and standby emergency teams, have been put in place to ensure the smooth conduct of the process.
