Second-half brilliance seals India’s spot in SAFF U-17 final

The India U-17 men’s national team stormed into the final of the SAFF U-17 Championship with a commanding 3-0 win over Nepal in the semi-final at the Racecourse International Stadium on Thursday.

After a goalless first half, the defending champions broke the deadlock in the 61st minute through Wangkheirakpam Gunleiba, before substitutes Azlaan Shah Kh (80’) and Diamond Singh Thokchom (90+4’) sealed the victory. The win sets up a high-stakes final against Bangladesh, who overcame Pakistan 2-0 earlier in the day.

Despite their dominance in possession and attacking play during the first half, India were left frustrated by missed chances. A close-range effort from Gunleiba was blocked, while forward Dallalmuon Gangte failed to convert a fine cross from Md Aimaan.

Defensively, however, the Blue Colts remained resolute. With disciplined midfield pressing and a compact backline, India restricted Nepal to long-range attempts. The only real scare came when Pratis Thapa Magar unleashed a powerful shot from the edge of the box, forcing goalkeeper Manashjyoti Baruah into a full-stretch save.

Head coach Bibiano Fernandes’s side eventually translated their dominance into goals in the second half, underlining their composure and maturity on the ball. The victory marked India’s fourth consecutive win in the tournament as they chase another SAFF U-17 crown.
