The scrutiny of nominations for the Jubilee Hills Assembly by-election commenced today, following the closure of the filing process on October 21. A total of 211 candidates submitted 321 nominations, with some filing multiple sets. The high volume of submissions necessitated the process to extend beyond the midnight deadline. The scrutiny is being conducted at the Shaikpet Returning Officer’s Office, and the last date for withdrawal of candidatures is October 24. Polling is scheduled for November 11, with the counting of votes on November 14.

The surge in nominations has been attributed to various groups, including farmers affected by land acquisition for projects like the Regional Ring Road (RRR), unemployed youth, and residents opposing urban development projects. Many of these individuals have filed nominations as a form of protest to highlight their grievances.

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has introduced several measures to ensure a free and fair election, including the use of Artificial Intelligence-based surveillance, GPS-enabled monitoring of sensitive polling stations, and the affixing of colour photographs of candidates on Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs). These steps aim to prevent malpractice and ensure transparency during the election process.

The bypoll was necessitated by the death of BRS MLA Maganti Gopinath in June this year. The key contenders for the seat are Maganti Sunitha (BRS), V Naveen Yadav (Congress), and Lankala Deepak Reddy (BJP). The ruling Congress has announced V Naveen Yadav as its candidate, while the opposition BRS has fielded Maganti Sunitha, the widow of the late MLA. BJP has nominated Lankala Deepak Reddy.

As the scrutiny process continues, the final list of candidates will be published after the withdrawal period ends on October 24. Voters are encouraged to stay informed and participate in the upcoming election to ensure a fair and representative outcome.
