Scottish Football Under Spotlight as Referee Targeted After Controversial Penalty Call
A Scottish football referee has been placed under police monitoring and security protection following intense backlash over a controversial handball decision that has escalated the Scottish Premiership title race tensions.
The Scottish Football Association (SFA) said referee John Beaton and his family spent the night at their home under police protection after personal details were leaked online . The governing body described the situation as an inevitable consequence of rising criticism, intolerance and scapegoating aimed at match officials.
The controversy stems from Beaton’s decision to award a penalty for handball in favour of Celtic during their match against Motherwell on Wednesday. The late call helped Celtic secure a dramatic victory and reduce the gap on league leaders Hearts to just one point, tightening the race at the top.
In an official statement, the SFA strongly condemned threats and abuse directed at officials, stressing that any attempts to compromise their safety were completely unacceptable. It warned that such behaviour, driven by disagreement over on-field decisions, has become a serious concern for the sport .
“The Scottish FA condemns in the strongest possible terms attempts to compromise the safety of match officials,” the statement said. It added that such actions, whether or not decisions are perceived as correct, are a scourge on the national game .
Police Scotland was praised for its swift intervention in ensuring the safety of the referee and his family amid the escalating situation.
The incident has once again highlighted the growing pressure on referees in high-stakes matches, with emotions around the title race now spilling far beyond the pitch.
