A Scottish football referee has been placed under police monitoring and security protection following intense backlash over a controversial handball decision that has escalated the Scottish Premiership title race tensions.

The Scottish Football Association (SFA) said referee John Beaton and his family spent the night at their home under police protection after personal details were leaked online .
