Science balloons could land in several AP districts, officials warn

The Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) has advised the public to stay alert regarding science research balloons being launched from Hyderabad. Operated under the supervision of the Department of Atomic Energy and Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), TIFR is conducting around 10 balloon experiments from October 25 to December 31.

According to TIFR, these balloons, along with their scientific instruments, may travel up to 350 kilometers depending on wind directions, potentially landing in several districts of Andhra Pradesh, including Visakhapatnam, Hyderabad, and Solapur.

The balloons rise to an altitude of approximately 42 kilometers, after which their research equipment descends back to the ground using parachutes. These instruments could land in districts such as East and West Godavari, Krishna, Guntur, Prakasam, Kurnool, Chittoor, Anantapur, Nellore, Srikakulam, Visakhapatnam, Kadapa, and Vizianagaram. TIFR has emphasized that these devices are highly sensitive, and touching or tampering with them could be dangerous.

If the public comes across any of these instruments, they are urged not to touch them and immediately inform the nearest police station, post office, or district authorities. Scientists will retrieve the devices, and those who report them to authorities may be rewarded. However, no rewards will be given to anyone attempting to open or tamper with the instruments. Authorities stressed that these precautions are essential for public safety.

Science balloons play a crucial role in studying weather patterns, space, and earth-atmosphere interactions. Flying at high altitudes, they collect data on temperature, air pressure, rainfall, and wind patterns. They are also used for research on radiation, solar activity, and astronomy. Being cost-effective, science balloons allow scientists to conduct large-scale experiments, test instruments for future satellites, and gather preliminary data for other space missions. However, since these balloons contain hydrogen gas, handling them can be hazardous.

Science balloons are vital research tools that provide valuable data to scientists about changes between Earth and space. By staying cautious and avoiding contact with these balloons, the public can contribute to scientific research while ensuring their own safety.
