Schools Evacuated As Magnitude 5.6 Earthquake Jolts Eastern Turkey
Eastern Turkey was jolted by a magnitude 5.6 earthquake on Wednesday morning, with authorities confirming that the tremor struck the eastern region near Battalgazi District in Malatya Province at around 9 am local time , according to the Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency.
Officials said the earthquake originated at a shallow depth of 7 km , which typically results in stronger surface shaking. Despite the intensity, there were no immediate reports of casualties or major structural damage in the initial hours after the quake.
The tremor triggered panic across affected areas, with residents rushing out of homes and public spaces as a precaution. Television visuals from the region showed schools being evacuated , with students escorted to open grounds while emergency protocols were activated.
Authorities quickly deployed response teams to assess infrastructure, monitor possible aftershocks, and ensure public safety. Officials also urged residents to remain cautious as evaluations continued across the affected districts.
Malatya lies in one of Turkey’s most seismically active regions due to its location along major fault systems, including the East Anatolian Fault and the North Anatolian Fault . The country sits at the junction of the Eurasian, African and Arabian tectonic plates , whose constant movement and friction frequently trigger earthquakes across the region.
The latest tremor comes more than three years after the devastating February 2023 Turkey-Syria earthquakes , which measured 7.8 magnitude and caused massive destruction across southern Turkey and northern Syria. Official figures later showed that 53,537 people were killed in Turkey , while the death toll in Syria exceeded 5,900 , taking the combined toll to nearly 60,000 people .
While Wednesday’s quake was significantly weaker, authorities continue to monitor the situation closely for aftershocks and any delayed reports of damage or injuries.
