SC to hear Asaduddin Owaisi’s plea seeking more time for Waqf property registration

The Supreme Court (SC) on Monday agreed to hear a plea filed by All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) leader Asaduddin Owaisi, seeking an extension of time for the mandatory registration of all Waqf properties, including “Waqf by user” .

The UMEED Portal (Unified Waqf Management, Empowerment, Efficiency & Development) operates under the Ministry of Minority Affairs, Government of India. It is a digital platform launched by the Central Government to manage and monitor Waqf assets across the country.

Under the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025, all Waqf properties must be registered and geo-tagged on the UMEED portal within six months of its launch.The initiative, inaugurated on June 6, 2025, aims to create a central digital inventory of Waqf assets, ensuring transparency, accountability, and efficiency while preventing encroachment or misuse of religious endowments.

Earlier, on September 15, 2025, the Supreme Court had passed an interim order partially staying certain provisions of the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025.The court stayed the clause that restricted the creation of Waqf to persons practising Islam for at least five years, calling it prima facie restrictive. However, it refused to stay the entire law, citing the presumption of constitutionality in favour of Parliament.

The bench also upheld the Centre’s decision to delete the “Waqf by user” clause, noting that concerns over governments attempting to “grab Waqf lands” “hold no water.”

The case will be listed again for hearing, during which the apex court will decide whether to extend the registration deadline under the UMEED portal and further examine the challenges to the amended Waqf law.
