SC allows sale and bursting of green crackers in Delhi-NCR for Diwali

The Supreme Court on Wednesday permitted the sale and bursting of green crackers in Delhi-NCR during Diwali, easing restrictions on environmentally friendly firecrackers.

A bench led by Chief Justice B R Gavai and Justice K Vinod Chandran approved the joint request made by the Centre and the Delhi government, allowing a temporary relaxation of the ban. The court specified that green crackers can be burst from October 18 to 21.

Green crackers are specially designed firecrackers that produce less smoke, reduce air pollution, and are less harmful to the environment compared to traditional fireworks. They are considered a safer option for festival celebrations, especially in cities struggling with high pollution levels.

While delivering the order, the Chief Justice emphasized the need for a balanced approach, stating, “Crackers smuggled into Delhi-NCR cause more harm than green firecrackers. We must allow celebrations in moderation without compromising the environment.”

The Supreme Court directed the Central Pollution Control Board and state pollution boards in the NCR to monitor pollution levels during the festival and submit reports. Patrolling teams will also inspect cracker manufacturers, and their QR codes must be uploaded online.

The order clearly states that no firecrackers manufactured outside Delhi-NCR can be sold in the region, and sellers violating this rule will face suspension of their licenses. A more detailed order is expected soon.

Earlier, on October 10, the apex court had reserved its judgment on pleas seeking permission to manufacture and sell green firecrackers in Delhi-NCR. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the Centre and NCR states, had requested the court to allow green crackers for festivals like Diwali, Guru Purab, and Christmas without any restrictions on timing.

This move comes as authorities aim to strike a balance between traditional festivities and environmental concerns, allowing residents to celebrate safely while controlling pollution levels.
