The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has unveiled Udai , the official mascot for Aadhaar, aimed at making communication about Aadhaar services simpler, more relatable, and citizen-friendly. The mascot was officially launched at a function in Thiruvananthapuram by UIDAI Chairman Neelkanth Mishra , who highlighted that Udai represents a significant step toward making Aadhaar accessible and understandable for over a billion residents of India. Udai is envisioned as a resident-facing companion, helping citizens navigate Aadhaar-related services such as updates, authentication, offline verification, selective information sharing, responsible usage, and the adoption of new technologies. It will act as both a narrator and a guide, making Aadhaar-related information easier to understand for people of all ages and education levels.

In a move emphasizing public participation, UIDAI conducted national competitions for both the mascot design and naming on the MyGov platform. The response was overwhelming, with 875 entries received from across India, including students, designers, and professionals. Each entry reflected a personal interpretation of what Aadhaar represents, including trust, inclusivity, empowerment, and digital innovation. The winners of the design competition were Arun Gokul from Thrissur, Kerala (first prize), Idris Dawaiwala from Pune (second prize), and Krishna Sharma from Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh (third prize). In the naming competition , Riya Jain from Bhopal won first prize with the name “Udai,” followed by Idris Dawaiwala and Maharaj Saran Chellapilla from Hyderabad in second and third place respectively. The mascot is a product of both public imagination and institutional diligence, combining creative freedom with a multi-tiered evaluation process to ensure fairness and excellence.

With Aadhaar being a core public utility used by over a billion residents, clear communication is essential. Udai will play a critical role in simplifying complex processes like enrolment, verification, and authentication, while promoting digital inclusion by bridging the information gap for rural communities, senior citizens, and first-time users. It will also help educate citizens about privacy, selective sharing, and responsible use of Aadhaar data, while reinforcing the principle that public participation builds trust and acceptance.

Neelkanth Mishra , UIDAI Chairman, emphasized that Udai reflects the authority’s commitment to inclusive and relatable communication for India’s diverse population. Bhuvnesh Kumar , CEO of UIDAI, noted that the overwhelming response to the competition demonstrates how deeply citizens connect with Aadhaar as a public good. Vivek C. Verma , Deputy Director General of UIDAI, explained that Udai will function as both a companion and a narrator, helping residents engage with Aadhaar-related information easily and confidently.

Udai will feature in awareness campaigns, user guides, educational materials, and digital platforms, helping residents understand new features and services while promoting responsible and informed usage. The mascot is envisioned as a friendly ambassador, making Aadhaar communication simpler, engaging, and accessible for all. The launch of Udai is more than symbolic, it represents a citizen-first approach, where public creativity and institutional oversight combine to make India’s largest digital identity system truly people-friendly.
