Saudi bus tragedy - 45 Hyderabad pilgrims laid to rest in Madinah’s Sacred Baqi

The 45 Hyderabad pilgrims who lost their lives in the Saudi bus tragedy were laid to rest on Thursday in Jannat ul Baqi, the sacred cemetery beside the Prophet’s Mosque in Madinah. The incident has left Telangana grieving, yet many families say they have found a measure of spiritual comfort in the belief that their loved ones attained shahadat (martyrdom) and were granted burial in one of Islam’s holiest sites, something countless believers pray for throughout their lives.

Jannat-ul-Baqi, also known as “The Garden of Paradise,” is one of the oldest cemeteries in Islamic history. It is the resting place of numerous companions of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), members of his blessed household, and many pious believers over fourteen centuries. For Muslims worldwide, burial in Madina and especially in Jannat-ul-Baqi is regarded as a rare honour and a symbol of eternal dignity.

Local religious scholars note that those who pass away while on pilgrimage are regarded with high spiritual status in Islamic belief. Dying in the sacred lands during an act of devotion is often interpreted as a sign of divine mercy. Community leaders in Hyderabad have expressed that the deceased are remembered as “martyrs on the journey of faith,” as they were engaged in worship and travel for religious purposes at the moment of their passing.

Soon after the tragedy, about 32 family members travelled to Madinah to complete DNA identification, formalities, and hospital procedures. These steps were completed with the support of Saudi authorities, following which the burials were conducted in accordance with Islamic rites.

A delegation from the Telangana government Mohammed Azharuddin, Minister for Minority Affairs; Majid Hussain, MLA of Nampally; and Shafiullah, IFS, Secretary of the Minority Welfare Department flew to Madinah the very next day after the incident. Since then, they have been stationed there, coordinating closely with Saudi authorities and the Consulate General of India (CGI) in Jeddah. The officials supervised identification procedures, facilitated communication between agencies, met with hospital and police officials, and ensured that all necessary permissions for burial were completed without delay.

Indian officials expressed gratitude for the prompt assistance provided by the Saudi government, which handled documentation, logistics, and burial arrangements with sensitivity and speed. The CGI continued to support families by providing translations, arranging meetings, and helping relatives who arrived in Madinah.

In Hyderabad, the tragedy has brought the community together in collective grief. Mosques across the city have been holding special prayers for the departed, and countless residents have offered dua for their forgiveness and for strength to their families. Many community members said that while the loss is immense, the belief that the deceased passed away in Madinah , a place where many Muslims wish to breathe their last and were buried in Baqi has brought spiritual comfort that words cannot capture.
