Satwik-Chirag stumble in final showdown

A heart-stopping final in Shenzhen ended in heartbreak for India’s Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty as they fell 19-21, 15-21 to Korea’s Kim Won Ho and Seo Seung Jae in the China Masters Super 750 final on Sunday. The Asian Games champions squandered a strong opening lead, leaving fans wondering what might have been.

The Indians had come into the final on the back of an impressive week, having reached their second consecutive final following a World Championships bronze and a runners-up finish at the Hong Kong Open. They started brightly in the first game, racing to a 14-7 lead, but could not hold on as errors crept in at crucial moments.

Kim and Seo, who reunited this season after experimenting with other partnerships, were appearing in their ninth final of 2025 and had already won six titles, including the World Championships in Paris and Super 1000 crowns at the All England and Indonesia Open. The match was billed as a clash of India’s aggressive attack against Korea’s sturdy defence, and it lived up to its billing with thrilling rallies and momentum swings.

In the opening game, India took an early 11-7 lead at the interval, later stretching it to 14-8. However, a series of unforced errors, combined with a lost video challenge, allowed the Koreans to fight back, winning eight of the next nine points to level at 15-all. A net error from Chirag gave Korea a game point, and despite India briefly recovering to 19-all, a precise winner from Kim and a wide shot from Chirag handed the first game to the Koreans.

The second game saw Satwik and Chirag continue to display attacking flair, with steep angled smashes and dazzling net play, including between-the-legs returns from both players. They led 8-6 but could not maintain control. Seo’s clever cross-court returns and delicate net shots gradually shifted the momentum to Korea. A string of Indian errors allowed the Koreans to pull ahead 18-15 and convert five match points, with Satwik sending the final return long to seal the match.

The defeat is a bitter blow for India’s top men’s doubles pair, who showed moments of brilliance but were undone by crucial mistakes at pivotal junctures. In the end, Kim and Seo’s experience and composure at key points proved decisive, as the world No.1 Koreans claimed yet another title in a stellar season.
