Satwik-Chirag Defend Consistency, Say Expectations Have Risen With Success

Fresh from becoming the first Indian men's doubles pair to win the Singapore Open, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty have strongly rejected suggestions that they have been inconsistent, arguing that their performances over the last two years should be viewed in the context of injuries, fierce competition and sustained success at the highest level.

The former world No. 1 duo ended a 742-day wait for a BWF World Tour title when they fought back from a game down to defeat Indonesia's Fajar Alfian and Muhammad Shohibul Fikri in the Singapore Open final. The victory marked their third Super 750 title and provided a significant boost ahead of a crucial phase of the season.

Responding to questions about their results during the title drought, Chirag pointed out that the pair remained among the world's best despite setbacks. He noted that calling the world No. 3 pair inconsistent would be unfair, especially considering they had climbed from world No. 27 back into the top three after injury-related absences.

Their comments highlight a broader reality in Indian sport: expectations from the country's top badminton pair have become exceptionally high because of their achievements . As former world No. 1s, Asian Games gold medallists, Asian champions and Thomas Cup medallists, Satwik and Chirag are often judged primarily by titles, even when they continue to reach the latter stages of major tournaments.

Satwik acknowledged that injuries had been one of the biggest challenges over the past two years, particularly given his aggressive style of play. However, he stressed that injuries are part of elite sport and that the focus has always been on returning fully fit for major competitions.

The Singapore Open success also came shortly after the pair expressed disappointment over the limited recognition received following India's bronze-medal finish at the Thomas Cup. While pleased with the increased attention after their latest triumph, Chirag said badminton deserved consistent media coverage rather than interest only when titles are won.

The pair also credited the guidance of coaches Mathias Boe and Tan Kim Her for providing tactical clarity and confidence. With the World Championships approaching and the road to the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics beginning to take shape, Satwik and Chirag believe the Singapore title can serve as a springboard for even bigger achievements.
