Satwik-Chirag Break China Masters Jinx, Beat He-Ren To Win Maiden Title

Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty finally broke their China Masters jinx in style, fighting back from a game down to defeat home favourites He Ji Ting and Ren Xiang Yu 11-21, 21-13, 21-17 and win their maiden China Masters Super 750 title in Shenzhen on Sunday.

The gruelling final lasted 1 hour and 10 minutes, with the world No. 5 Indian pair showing remarkable composure after a difficult start. The victory also secured their 10th BWF World Tour title and extended their head-to-head record against He and Ren to 3-0.

The triumph marks their second title of the 2026 season, following their Singapore Open Super 750 victory. They had also reached the final of the Thailand Open Super 500. The Asian Games champions are now heading into the Asian Games with another major confidence boost after returning from injury setbacks.

The final began badly for Satwik and Chirag. The Chinese pair raced to a 5-0 lead and used their relentless pace at the front of the court to prevent the Indians from settling into their attacking rhythm. He and Ren repeatedly attacked through the centre and forced their opponents into uncomfortable defensive positions.

Satwik and Chirag struggled to find answers as the Chinese duo controlled the opening exchanges and closed out the first game 21-11, leaving the Indians needing a major turnaround to end their China Masters heartbreak.

The Indian pair had finished runners-up in the 2023 and 2025 editions, but they changed their approach dramatically in the second game.

Chirag played a key role in the tactical shift, intercepting the shuttle earlier and preventing He and Ren from controlling the net. The Indians began moving their opponents from side to side, while improved defence created opportunities for combinations of smashes rather than relying solely on Satwik's power.

The adjustment transformed the contest. Satwik and Chirag began dictating the rallies and took the second game 21-13 to force a decider.

The third game was closely fought, with the Chinese pair initially holding the advantage. Satwik and Chirag, however, stayed composed and continued to apply pressure from the back of the court. Their aggression eventually helped them turn the contest around.

The Indians moved ahead at a crucial stage and finished strongly as errors began creeping into He and Ren's game. Satwik and Chirag held their nerve in the closing exchanges before sealing the decider 21-17 and completing a memorable comeback.

The title is particularly significant for the pair after their previous disappointments in China. It also comes after a difficult period in which both players spent considerable time away from competition because of injury.

"We wanted those crucial matches before playing the Asian Games. We wanted to get that feeling and get that confidence," Satwik had said after reaching the final.

Their China Masters campaign provided exactly that. After recovering from a game down in the final and overcoming another demanding three-game semifinal against Malaysia's Nur Mohd Azriyn Ayub and Tan Wee Kiong, Satwik and Chirag leave Shenzhen with their first China Masters crown, their 10th BWF World Tour title and renewed momentum heading into the Asian Games. For a pair that had twice fallen short in China, the third attempt proved to be the charm.
