Samson or Sooryavanshi? India Face Opening Dilemma Against West Indies
Fresh from their Asian Games triumph, India will begin their T20I series against a dangerous West Indies side today, with head coach Gautam Gambhir facing a major selection dilemma over the opening combination.
The biggest question is whether Gambhir opts for experienced wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson or teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi alongside world No. 1 T20 batter Abhishek Sharma. Given India's strong middle order, it appears unlikely that both Samson and Sooryavanshi will make the playing XI.
During the Asian Games, former coach VVS Laxman used all three, with Abhishek and Sooryavanshi opening and Samson coming in at No. 3. The approach was influenced by difficult, tacky pitches in Japan. However, the expected batting-friendly surface at Ekana Stadium could encourage Gambhir to restore Samson as an opener.
Samson was not entirely comfortable at No. 3 during the Asian Games, but he had scored two half-centuries in India's previous home T20I series against Afghanistan. With Ishan Kishan, captain Shreyas Iyer, Tilak Varma, Shivam Dube, Nitish Kumar Reddy and Axar Patel also available, India's middle order already has considerable depth.
Gambhir's other selection challenge is the pace attack. Arshdeep Singh is the experienced option, while Delhi pacers Mayank Yadav and Prince Yadav have played only six and three T20Is respectively. If India want greater batting depth, Naman Dhir, who has replaced Washington Sundar in the squad, could come into the XI at the expense of one of the inexperienced pacers.
The spin department is expected to feature Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav, while Abhishek could also contribute with the ball after showcasing his left-arm spin at the Asian Games.
The series will also be a test of Shreyas Iyer's captaincy against a proven T20 side. West Indies, led by Shai Hope, have two T20 World Cup titles, in 2012 and 2016, and boast experienced IPL performers such as Shimron Hetmyer, Rovman Powell, Sherfane Rutherford and Romario Shepherd.
India, however, have the advantage of a strong home record, having defeated West Indies in nine of their last 10 T20I matches in India. The visitors remain capable of upsetting any side on their day.
The first T20I will begin at 7 PM today at Ekana Stadium, setting the stage for an intriguing battle between India's new-look approach and West Indies' proven T20 firepower.
