Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday paid homage to former Bihar Chief Minister and Bharat Ratna awardee Karpoori Thakur during his visit to Karpoori Gram , the late leader’s native village in Samastipur district.

The Prime Minister was accompanied by Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar , Union Minister Ram Nath Thakur , Karpoori Thakur’s son, and other leaders. During the visit, Modi also met the family members of the socialist icon.

Born on January 24, 1924 , in Ujiyarpur village (now Karpoori Gram), Thakur rose from humble beginnings, embracing socialist ideals and actively participating in India’s freedom movement. He began his political journey with the Indian National Congress , later joining socialist parties, and emerged as a key leader advocating for the rights of the poor and backward classes.

Thakur served as Bihar’s Chief Minister from December 22, 1970, to June 2, 1971 , leading a coalition government that faced political instability, which forced him to resign after just six months. He returned to office for a second term from June 24, 1977, to April 21, 1979 , following the Janata Party’s post-Emergency victory. During his tenure, he championed reservation policies for backward classes , promoted rural development , and strengthened educational opportunities for the underprivileged . He was known for placing principles above power , even resigning when policies for social justice were threatened.

His lifelong dedication to social equity, political integrity, and the welfare of marginalized communities earned him the Bharat Ratna in 2024 , India’s highest civilian honour. The award recognized not only his political leadership but also his enduring contributions to uplifting disadvantaged communities and shaping Bihar’s socio-political landscape .

Karpoori Thakur remains an enduring symbol of simplicity, integrity, and dedication to public service , inspiring generations of politicians and social reformers across Bihar and India.
