Safety over speed: ICC responds to criticism on delayed player departures

The International Cricket Council (ICC) on Wednesday expressed sympathy for West Indies and South African players stranded in India after the T20 World Cup 2026 , emphasizing that safety, feasibility, and welfare are the driving factors behind the delayed travel arrangements.

The disruption comes amid the West Asia crisis , triggered by American and Israeli strikes on Iran , which has led to widespread airspace closures across the Gulf , forcing airlines to cancel, reroute, or reschedule flights at short notice. Emirates, the ICC’s airline partner, is unable to operate due to the shutdown of Dubai airspace , adding to the logistical challenges.

ICC confirmed that the South African team will begin departing India Wednesday night, with all members expected home within 36 hours. Meanwhile, nine West Indies players have already left, and the remaining 16 have been booked on commercial flights within the next 24 hours after their charter flight from Kolkata was canceled . The ICC pledged to provide updates as further departures are confirmed .

The world governing body rejected criticism that other teams received preferential treatment , stressing that decisions are made solely based on safety and operational feasibility . “There is no link between arrangements for South Africa and West Indies and those previously made for England or any other nation,” the ICC clarified, noting each situation involved separate circumstances, routing options, and travel conditions.

The ICC said it is working around the clock with airlines, charter operators, airport authorities, and government stakeholders to ensure all players reach home safely. The organization highlighted its ongoing focus on the welfare of players traveling with spouses and young children and urged cricket boards, management, and players to remain patient amid this exceptionally complex and time-consuming situation .
