SAD Amritsar Unveils First 20 Candidates for 2027 Punjab Assembly Elections

The Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar) has released its first list of 20 candidates for the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections, becoming one of the earliest parties to announce nominees for the state polls due early next year. The names were cleared at a meeting of the party's Parliamentary Board in Fatehgarh Sahib.

Parliamentary Board Secretary Gurjant Singh Kattu said the party's working president, Iman Singh Mann, will contest from the Sri Fatehgarh Sahib Assembly constituency. Other candidates named in the first list include Mahinderpal Singh (Patiala Rural), Kuldeep Singh Bhagowal (Rupnagar), Kushalpal Singh Mann (Kharar), Gurnam Singh Singriwal (Garhshankar), Gurnaib Singh Rampura (Sangrur), Baldev Singh Gagra (Nihal Singh Wala), Harjinder Singh Jakhu (Bhadaur) and Parminder Singh Balianwali (Maur), along with several others.

Kattu said the party will soon announce candidates for the remaining seats. Punjab has 117 Assembly constituencies, and voting is expected to take place in early 2027.

The announcement comes at a time when political activity is picking up across Punjab. The ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), the Congress, the Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have all started stepping up preparations for the election. SAD (Badal) has already begun work on its election manifesto and plans to launch a campaign against the AAP government over issues such as law and order, the economy and governance.

The latest list also comes as Punjab's Panthic politics continues to change. Different Sikh political groups are exploring new political options and possible tie ups ahead of the Assembly polls, making the contest more competitive.

So far, SAD (Amritsar) has not announced any alliance or made any changes to its first list. There has also been no second list of candidates yet. The party is expected to name candidates for the remaining constituencies in the coming weeks as it steps up its campaign for the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections.
