Sacred Hill Comes Alive as Simhachalam Hosts Grand Annual Festival
Even before sunrise, the sacred hill of Simhachalam was filled with a steady stream of devotees, all drawn by a rare spiritual opportunity the annual holy viewing of Lord Sri Varaha Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy in His true form .
The occasion marked the grand celebration of Chandanotsavam , one of the most significant temple festivals in Andhra Pradesh, observed on the auspicious day of Akshaya Tritiya . For most of the year, the idol remains covered with layers of sandalwood paste, a unique tradition symbolizing divine protection and calmness. On this special day, the layers are ceremonially removed, allowing devotees a limited-time glimpse of the deity’s original form an experience considered deeply sacred and spiritually rewarding.
Representing the state government, Home Minister Vangalapudi Anita offered silk robes to the deity and performed special prayers. Describing the moment as a blessing earned through good deeds of a previous life, she later visited the shrine with her family.
What distinguished this year’s celebrations was the smooth management of the massive crowd. Authorities introduced a slot-based entry system , supported by digital ticketing measures such as QR codes. This ensured that the flow of devotees remained steady and well-organized, avoiding overcrowding and disruptions.
The first ceremonial viewing was performed by hereditary trustee and Goa Governor Ashok Gajapathi Raju , after which the temple was opened to the public. From that point onward, the movement of devotees continued in a disciplined and orderly manner.
Minister Anita also interacted directly with devotees waiting in queues, seeking feedback on the arrangements. Many expressed satisfaction, reflecting the administration’s focus on providing a comfortable and hassle-free spiritual experience .
Behind the scenes, extensive logistical planning supported the event. Hundreds of buses were deployed to facilitate transportation, while traffic regulations ensured smooth movement to and from the hill shrine. To help devotees cope with the summer heat, shaded shelters and fans were installed along queue lines, and medical assistance teams were kept ready. The distribution of large quantities of prasadam further enhanced the festive atmosphere.
The festival at Simhachalam stands as a powerful example of how deep-rooted spiritual traditions can coexist with modern administrative efficiency . While the sacred viewing lasts only a few hours, the sense of devotion and fulfillment it brings continues to resonate with devotees long after they leave the temple.
