Cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar on Wednesday visited the Bastar region, once a Maoist stronghold, with Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai describing the tour as the beginning of a “new innings” for a ‘Naxal-free’ region .

The Mumbai-based cricketer and Bharat Ratna awardee travelled to Dantewada district as part of a grassroots sports initiative, weeks after the state government declared Chhattisgarh free of Naxal influence. His visit to Chhindnar village reflects a broader transformation in Bastar—from a history of conflict to a future centred on development and opportunity.

In a post on X, Sai said Tendulkar’s presence would inspire children and youth , promoting discipline, confidence, and team spirit. He termed the ‘Maidan Cup Campaign’ a visionary step to strengthen sports infrastructure in tribal areas and ensure holistic development.

The campaign is being implemented by the Sachin Tendulkar Foundation in collaboration with the Mann Deshi Foundation, with support from the district administration.

During his visit, Tendulkar inaugurated a multi-sports ground at Swami Atmanand Hindi Medium High School in Chhindnar. The facility is among 25 playgrounds developed under the initiative, which aims to build 50 playgrounds across Dantewada in the Bastar region comprising seven districts.

In a gesture that delighted locals, Tendulkar also interacted closely with students and joined them in play , including participating in a game of tug of war as part of the ‘Maidan Cup’ activities, creating an atmosphere of enthusiasm and connection.

Addressing students, he emphasised that hard work, discipline, and consistent practice are key to success, stressing there are no shortcuts to achieving goals . He also advised children to choose friends wisely and strive to become responsible individuals.

Launched last year, the initiative builds on these efforts to transform the region into a thriving sports hub, opening new avenues for youth and helping shed its conflict-ridden image. In line with this vision, the state government, Sai added, remains committed to prioritising sports and youth development as a key driver of Bastar’s progress.
