Second seed Aryna Sabalenka suffered a surprise early exit from the China Open on Sunday, losing in straight sets to Czech Republic’s Nikola Bartunkova in the third round of the WTA 1000 tournament in Beijing.

World No. 34 Bartunkova produced one of the biggest upsets of the tournament, defeating the four-time Grand Slam champion 6-4, 6-3 in just over 90 minutes. Her victory means both of the China Open’s top two seeds have now been eliminated in the opening week.

Newly crowned world No. 1 Elena Rybakina was knocked out on Saturday, and Sabalenka’s defeat a day later leaves the Beijing draw without its two highest-ranked players.

Sabalenka struggled to find her best tennis throughout the contest. The Belarusian missed five break-point opportunities in the opening set, allowing Bartunkova to seize control at crucial moments. The Czech player then maintained her composure in the second set, breaking away from Sabalenka to complete a memorable victory.

The defeat also extended Sabalenka’s difficult record at the China Open. The 28-year-old has never advanced beyond the quarterfinals in Beijing, despite her status as one of the leading players on the WTA Tour.

For Bartunkova, the victory marks a major breakthrough against one of the sport’s biggest stars. The Czech will next face Sinja Kraus of Austria in the fourth round. The 24-year-old Kraus advanced after beating Ukraine’s Dayana Yastremska 6-1, 6-4.

The China Open has already delivered major surprises, with the exits of Rybakina and Sabalenka dramatically opening up the women’s draw.

In the men’s tournament, top seed and US Open champion Alexander Zverev is scheduled to face Novak Djokovic in a quarterfinal later on Sunday, adding another blockbuster clash to an increasingly unpredictable week in Beijing.
