World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka battled past Naomi Osaka to reach the quarterfinals of the Madrid Open, as the tournament was overshadowed by a suspected illness outbreak affecting several players.

Sabalenka rallied from a set and a break down to win 6-7(1), 6-3, 6-2, extending her winning streak to 15 matches. However, the focus has shifted off the court, with players grappling with what is believed to be either a stomach virus or food poisoning , the exact cause still unconfirmed.

The health scare has impacted multiple players. Iga Świątek withdrew citing illness, while Marin Čilić pulled out after suffering food poisoning. Coco Gauff, who had earlier vomited during a match, exited after a three-set loss to Linda Nosková. Second seed Elena Rybakina also crashed out in straight sets to Anastasia Potapova.

With players sharing facilities and dining areas, concerns have grown over a possible spread within the tournament environment. Even a mild illness can cause dehydration, fatigue, and loss of stamina , severely affecting performance in high-intensity matches.

Sabalenka said she is taking precautions, sticking to a simple diet and limiting her time at the venue. “So far, so good,” she said, referring to efforts to avoid falling sick. Reports among players have even pointed to contaminated food as a possible source, though nothing has been officially confirmed.

The situation is particularly worrying given the tournament’s importance in the build-up to the French Open. Any illness at this stage could disrupt preparation and form ahead of the season’s second Grand Slam.

Sabalenka will next face Hailey Baptiste, who advanced after defeating Belinda Bencic in a match featuring one of the longest tiebreakers on tour in recent years. While competition intensifies, players remain wary of what many are calling an “invisible opponent” , with health and hygiene now as crucial as performance on court.
