India don’t have the luxury of slow starts anymore. After a six-wicket loss in the opener , Sunday’s second T20I in Durban already feels like a crucial checkpoint in this five-match series.

The first game exposed a pattern that has quietly troubled India, a strong foundation, but no finish . From 119/2 in the 15th over, the innings slipped to 157/7. Captain Harmanpreet Kaur (47) and Jemimah Rodrigues (36) steadied things, but the final five overs brought just 33 runs* , leaving India short of a match-winning total.

The top order showed promise. Shafali Verma provided early momentum, but Smriti Mandhana couldn’t convert her start. When acceleration was needed, the lower order failed to deliver , something India must correct quickly.

Mandhana admitted the side “could not capitalise as a batting unit,” underlining the key concern heading into the next game.

If batting lacked the final punch, the bowling lacked control and discipline. India conceded 14 wides , a costly stat in a tight format. The pace trio of Renuka Singh Thakur , Arundhati Reddy and Kashvee Gautam struggled, while the spin unit led by Shreyanka Patil provided some much-needed control.

South Africa, on the other hand, were clinical in execution. Skipper Laura Wolvaardt led from the front, while Annerie Dercksen and Chloe Tryon finished with authority. With the ball, Ayabonga Khaka and Tumi Sekhukhune ensured India never gained full control.

There were also costly fielding lapses , including dropped chances at the death, small moments that made a big difference.

With the T20 World Cup approaching, this series is turning into a reality check . The task is clear now, finish stronger, bowl tighter, field sharper .

Because at this level, it’s not about chances. It’s about execution under pressure.
