Russian Missile and Drone Barrage Devastates Kyiv, Nine Killed

Russia launched a large-scale overnight assault involving ballistic missiles and drones on Ukraine's capital early Saturday, killing at least nine civilians and injuring 22 others, according to Ukrainian authorities. The attack caused widespread destruction across multiple districts of Kyiv, damaging residential buildings, commercial properties and public infrastructure while forcing emergency teams into hours-long rescue operations.

The worst-hit areas were Solomianskyi and Darnytskyi districts, where residential neighborhoods bore the brunt of the strikes. In Solomianskyi, debris from intercepted missiles struck a five-storey apartment building, sparking a fire that trapped residents inside. Rescue personnel evacuated 35 people, while two people lost their lives and eight others, including two children, sustained injuries.

In the Darnytskyi district, the devastation was even greater. Authorities confirmed seven deaths and 14 injuries after explosions triggered fires and severely damaged homes, vehicles, administrative offices and other buildings. Emergency crews also extinguished a blaze at a non-residential structure in the Shevchenkivskyi district, while damage was reported in several other parts of the capital.

The latest bombardment comes just two days after another massive Russian missile and drone attack across Ukraine that killed 10 civilians, wounded more than 50 people, and reportedly saw a Russian missile briefly enter Polish airspace, heightening regional security concerns.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy renewed calls for additional Patriot air defence systems, stressing that advanced missile interceptors remain essential to protecting civilians from increasingly frequent Russian ballistic missile attacks.

Following a recent meeting with US President Donald Trump and discussions with Vice President JD Vance, Zelenskyy described the talks as constructive. However, uncertainty remains over Washington's proposed plan to allow Ukraine to manufacture Patriot systems, with Trump stating that no final decision has yet been made.

For Kyiv residents, the psychological burden of the war continues to deepen. Many described another sleepless night punctuated by repeated air raid sirens, powerful explosions and shattered homes, underscoring the mounting humanitarian toll as Russia's aerial campaign shows little sign of easing.
