Russian FM Lavrov to Arrive May 14–15 for BRICS Meet in India
Sergey Lavrov, Russia’s Foreign Minister, is scheduled to visit India on May 14–15 to participate in the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting , a key gathering that will help shape the agenda for the upcoming BRICS Summit under India’s presidency.
According to Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Andrey Rudenko, the ministerial meeting will play a crucial role in outlining the final documents and priorities that India will present at the summit. The discussions are expected to focus on strengthening coordination among member nations on global economic and geopolitical issues.
On the sidelines of the meeting, Lavrov will also undertake a separate bilateral visit , during which he is expected to hold talks with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and other senior officials. These discussions will review the current state of India–Russia relations and explore ways to deepen cooperation across sectors.
India, which holds the BRICS presidency in 2026, is expected to steer the expanded grouping which now includes new members such as Egypt, Iran, the UAE, Ethiopia, and Indonesia towards a more coordinated global role. The meeting in New Delhi is seen as a key preparatory step in that direction.
Lavrov’s visit also underscores efforts to further strengthen the India–Russia strategic partnership , particularly in trade, technology, and investment. Bilateral trade between the two countries reached approximately USD 60 billion in 2025, with both sides aiming to scale it up to USD 100 billion by 2030 . Cooperation in initiatives like the International North-South Transport Corridor is expected to feature in discussions.
Earlier, Lavrov had emphasised the enduring nature of ties between the two nations, describing them as a “time-tested friendship” built on mutual trust and respect. He also expressed optimism about continued high-level engagement, including a possible visit by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Russia in 2026.
The visit follows sustained diplomatic engagement between the two countries and highlights their intent to deepen collaboration at both multilateral and bilateral levels .
