The human cost of the prolonged Russia-Ukraine war was once again laid bare on Monday when a Russian drone strike on the northeastern Ukrainian city of Sumy killed three members of the same family, including a 13-year-old boy , local authorities said.

The attack struck a residential home, leaving a trail of devastation and grief. According to regional military administration chief Oleh Hryhorov , those killed included a 36-year-old man , his teenage son, and a 73-year-old woman , who was the mother of the man's partner. Two other family members, including a 10-year-old boy , were injured in the strike and rushed for medical treatment.

The latest tragedy comes as civilian casualties across Ukraine continue to rise despite ongoing international efforts to end the conflict. More than four years after Russia launched its full scale invasion, attacks involving drones and missiles remain a near daily reality for millions of Ukrainians living far from the front lines.

The United Nations has reported a sharp increase in civilian deaths and injuries in recent months. According to the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine , at least 274 civilians were killed and 1,763 injured during May , marking the highest monthly civilian casualty count since April 2022. The majority of those affected were living in cities and towns away from active combat zones.

Elsewhere, another overnight Russian drone attack hit the southeastern city of Zaporizhzhia , killing a woman and injuring three people, including an 11-year-old child , regional officials said.

Ukraine's Air Force reported that Russia launched 88 long range attack drones and one ballistic missile overnight. Ukrainian air defenses claimed to have intercepted or electronically jammed 79 of those drones before they could reach their intended targets.

Meanwhile, Ukraine continued its own long range drone campaign against Russian military and infrastructure targets. Russia's Defence Ministry said it intercepted 301 Ukrainian drones overnight across several regions, including Crimea , the Azov Sea , and the Black Sea .

The latest exchange of attacks underscores the continuing intensity of the war, with US-led peace initiatives yet to produce a breakthrough. As diplomacy struggles to gain traction, civilians on both sides remain caught in a conflict that shows few signs of ending.
