Russian Drone Strike Kills 5 On Ukraine Bus As Moscow Claims 1,200+ Troops Lost

A Russian drone struck a passenger bus near Nikopol in Ukraine’s Dnipropetrovsk region early Wednesday, killing five people and injuring at least seven, as Moscow stepped up attacks on Ukraine’s transport and military logistics networks. Ukrainian officials said all five victims died at the scene, while the injured were taken for medical treatment.

The strike happened in the Nikopol district, close to the southern front line. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called it an “atrocity” and said there was “no military rationale” for hitting the vehicle. He said Russian attacks on logistics and critical infrastructure were continuing.

The attacks also hit Ukraine’s railway network. Zelenskyy said a passenger train in the Mykolaiv region was struck, damaging a railway station and a diesel locomotive. Nearly 170 passengers were evacuated before the attack. An electric locomotive in Kovel, in northwestern Ukraine near the Polish border, was also hit.

The strikes highlight the pressure on Ukraine’s railways, which have become vital for civilian travel, evacuations and the movement of goods because the country’s airspace has remained closed since Russia’s full scale invasion. Ukrainian Railways says Russian forces have hit around 1,700 railway facilities in 2026, while more than 500 locomotives have been damaged or destroyed since February 2022.

Russia has also claimed a wider military campaign against Ukrainian logistics. Moscow says its forces struck military logistics, railway infrastructure and port facilities, while claiming that more than 1,200 Ukrainian troops were killed or wounded across frontline sectors over a 24 hour period. Russia has also reported intercepting hundreds of Ukrainian drones. These battlefield and casualty claims have not been independently verified.

Meanwhile, Ukraine says it is testing a new locally developed anti drone weapon. Zelenskyy said the system successfully intercepted a Russian jet powered Shahed drone, although further technical improvements are still needed. Ukrainian forces have been developing cheaper interceptor systems as Russia deploys increasingly sophisticated drones.

The latest escalation comes amid uncertainty over a proposed energy infrastructure moratorium. US President Donald Trump said Russia and Ukraine had agreed to stop attacking each other’s energy facilities, but Zelenskyy has said Kyiv is prepared to support such an arrangement only if Moscow also stops its attacks. Russia has welcomed the US proposal while maintaining that its military operations would continue during any potential peace talks.

The Kremlin’s position underscores the gap between discussions on a possible energy pause and the fighting on the ground. Previous attempts at limited ceasefires have repeatedly broken down amid accusations of violations.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian officials reported damage to 17 sites in the Kyiv region, including homes, vehicles, a municipal building, a hangar and a production facility. Zelenskyy also reported attacks in Kherson, Donetsk and Poltava.

Russia’s Defence Ministry said its air defences had downed 71 Ukrainian drones overnight. In Russia’s Belgorod region, one person was killed and four injured in Ukrainian attacks over the previous 24 hours, according to acting governor Alexander Shuvayev.
