Russian Drone Hits Kyiv Warsaw Train Near Polish Border, Ukraine Condemns Strike

A Russian drone damaged the locomotive of a Kyiv Warsaw passenger train near Ukraine’s border with Poland on Sunday, September 13, as separate strikes hit a truck and a petrol station close to the Yahodyn Dorohusk crossing. Ukrainian officials warned that Moscow’s attacks were reaching the doorstep of the European Union and NATO.

The train was travelling from Kyiv to Warsaw when it was hit in Ukraine’s Volyn region, about 2 km from the Polish border, according to Ukrainian officials and reports by the Financial Times and Notes from Poland. Poland’s PKP Intercity said the train was carrying 206 passengers.

No casualties were reported. Ukrainian railway authorities had received an advance warning of a possible drone threat and the train was evacuated, allowing passengers and crew to avoid injury.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Moscow had “deliberately” struck the train as western regions of Ukraine came under attack. The incident occurred near the Yahodyn Dorohusk crossing, an important route between Ukraine and Poland.

In a separate strike, a truck was hit around 800 metres from the Polish border crossing, while a petrol station near Yahodyn was also damaged. Videos circulating online showed a large fire in the area. There were no immediate reports of casualties from the petrol station incident.

Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha condemned the attacks, saying Russian President Vladimir Putin’s forces were “knocking directly on the doors of the EU and NATO.” He described the incident as “Putin’s terror” and urged Ukraine’s international partners to respond with stronger sanctions.

The strikes came during a wider Russian aerial assault involving hundreds of drones against targets across Ukraine. Ukrainian officials said attacks also hit civilian and transport infrastructure in several regions.

The latest incidents have intensified concerns in Europe over Russian attacks close to NATO territory, particularly along Ukraine’s western border. Kyiv has repeatedly warned its allies that continued strikes on infrastructure near EU borders pose a wider security threat.

The Yahodyn Dorohusk crossing was also temporarily disrupted following the attacks, underlining the potential impact on transport and trade routes connecting Ukraine with the European Union.
