A Russian drone struck a Chinese-owned cargo vessel in the Black Sea near Ukraine’s Odesa region during a night of intensified warfare, adding diplomatic sensitivity ahead of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s expected meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing.

Ukrainian naval authorities said the vessel, KSL Deyang, was sailing under a Marshall Islands flag and operated by a China-based company with a Chinese crew. The ship suffered minor damage after a fire was quickly extinguished, and no casualties were reported. Another civilian vessel was also reportedly hit in the same Black Sea strike wave, highlighting rising maritime risks.

The incident unfolded alongside a major Russian aerial offensive involving more than 500 drones and missiles . President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said at least eight regions were targeted, with most weapons intercepted but several still hitting infrastructure.

Dnipro and the wider Dnipropetrovsk region were the worst affected, with residential buildings, a university, a religious site, and energy infrastructure damaged. Authorities reported dozens of civilian injuries, including children , as rescue operations continued. Further strikes were confirmed in Odesa, Chernihiv and Zaporizhzhia regions, showing an expanding strike footprint.

At the same time, Ukraine launched what multiple reports describe as its largest drone assault on Russia since World War II , with nearly 600 drones targeting Moscow, Belgorod and other regions. Russian officials said at least four people were killed, with damage to residential and industrial sites, though many drones were intercepted.

The dual strikes underline a sharp escalation in long-range warfare , with both sides now conducting deep cross-border attacks at scale. Analysts warn the war is expanding significantly beyond frontlines, increasing strain on air defences and civilian risk.

Russian officials said their strikes targeted military-industrial and energy infrastructure, claiming all objectives were met.

The Black Sea incident is likely to draw diplomatic attention ahead of the Putin–Xi meeting.
