Russia Unleashes Drone and Missile Barrage on Kyiv With 600 Drones, 90 Missiles, Killing Several
Russia launched a massive overnight assault on Ukraine, firing a hypersonic “Oreshnik” missile along with 600 drones and 90 missiles , Ukrainian military officials said, in one of the largest coordinated attacks in recent months.
Ukrainian authorities said Kyiv was hit hardest, with explosions lasting through the night as air defences attempted to intercept successive waves of incoming weapons. Officials confirmed at least four people were killed and more than 80 injured , with damage reported to residential buildings, schools, foreign ministry premises, and critical infrastructure across multiple districts.
The use of the Oreshnik hypersonic missile , capable of extremely high speeds and difficult interception, marked a continued escalation in Russia’s reliance on advanced long-range systems. Ukrainian officials said the strike demonstrated a deliberate effort to overwhelm air defence networks through volume and coordination.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Kyiv was the main target , warning that Russia was intensifying pressure on civilian areas. Ukraine’s air force reported that many drones and missiles were intercepted, but several still reached urban zones, causing fires and destruction.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said “every district of the city” had been affected, with emergency teams working overnight to rescue survivors, extinguish fires, and clear debris. Residents sheltered in metro stations as repeated explosions shook the capital.
Russia said the strikes targeted Ukrainian military infrastructure in response to Ukrainian attacks on Russian positions. Kyiv rejected the claim, accusing Moscow of deliberately striking civilian areas.
The attack comes amid escalating cross-border strikes, with Ukraine increasing drone attacks on Russian energy sites and Russia expanding large-scale missile and drone salvos on Ukrainian cities.
Separately, Russian filmmaker Andrey Zvyagintsev condemned the war at a Cannes-related event, calling it “carnage” and urging an end to the conflict.
Western officials warn the war is entering a more dangerous phase as hypersonic weapons, drones, and missile barrages increasingly dominate the battlefield.
